Using the Apple Watch, you can unlock your iPhone while you’re wearing a face mask, which is a function that’s been there for a while now. You may not have realized, however, that this capability has been available on the Mac for some time. If you’re wearing your Apple Watch and it’s unlocked, you don’t even have to tap a button to log into your Mac account. To unlock your user account, all you have to do is open the MacBook’s lid (or wake up the Mac).

Is this functionality compatible with all Macs and Apple Watches?

Of course, not all Macs are compatible with the “Unlock with Apple Watch” function, and those that are will only operate if certain system requirements are satisfied.

The system specifications

You need to do this before you can:

  • Allow Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to be turned on on your Mac computer.
  • Your Apple ID should have two-factor authentication.
  • Give your Apple Watch a password to protect it from unauthorized access.

You must also have a Mac that was launched after mid-2013 and is running macOS Sierra or above in order to use this app. Check your Mac’s compatibility by going to Apple > About Your Mac and looking at the compatibility information. To validate, go to System Report > Network > Wi-Fi and search for the “Auto unlock: supported” item.)

What is the procedure for enabling the Apple Watch unlock function on a Mac computer?

It is possible to activate the function on a per-user basis on a Mac computer. System Preferences may be accessed by clicking on the Apple symbol in the top menu bar and selecting the option. The “Security & Privacy” section is here. Check the “Use your Apple Watch to unlock applications and your Mac” option under the “General” menu.

Once this functionality is activated, you’ll be able to authorize requests and log into applications using your Apple Watch. On your Apple Watch, you’ll notice a notification if you’ve been asked to sign in. In order to approve a request, just press the Side button twice, and you’ll be done.
