Use Adaptive Battery to Extend the Lifespan of Your Android Device

When you’re done using an app, it’s pushed out of the device’s memory, and the applications that you use the most frequently are stored in the memory for faster, simpler access.

According to Google, this means that programs only consume battery power when absolutely necessary. Behind the scenes, a sophisticated neural network tries to predict which applications you’ll need soon and which ones you’ll want to save for later in the day (if not later in the week or month).

DeepMind technology is used to classify programs, which then decides how much system resources they are permitted to consume. It’s possible that the applications you seldom use will run a little slower when you return to them since Android has to reload all the app’s components into memory. Messages from these applications may also take longer to arrive.

Exactly how much longer you may go without charging your phone is entirely dependent on the phone you use and the activities you perform on it. A 5 percent reduction in CPU load was touted by Google when Adaptive Battery was first introduced, but customers have since observed a considerable boost in battery life after the function had time to work its magic.

Adaptive Battery’s operation is also influenced by the present status of your phone: The constraints on what applications may do are less severe if your phone is plugged in and charging. Google’s machine intelligence expertise has also been used to charging, but this does not directly impact battery life.

Adaptive Battery should be enabled by default in Android versions 9 and beyond. In order to find out, go to Settings, choose Battery and Adaptive settings, and then check. The adaptive charging function, which is only available on the Pixel for the time being, will be accompanied with an Adaptive Battery toggle option in Android 12 if your phone supports it.

It’s all there is to it when it comes to Adaptive Battery settings. Nothing can be configured or tweaked because Android and its built-in algorithms take care of everything. There is a Battery Saver mode that places even more limits on background activities across all your apps in order to keep your battery life at an optimal level.

It’s important to keep in mind that Adaptive Battery may need some time to learn how you use your applications on a new device. You’ll probably see the benefits of the feature after a week or two of using your phone following an upgrade or reset to factory defaults. To put it another way, don’t turn off Adaptive Battery on a new phone just because you don’t see any difference.

If you don’t want particular applications to be affected by the Adaptive Battery procedure, Android gives you the option to omit them (some apps will actually request this kind of special treatment when you install them). Select Apps from the Settings menu, and then choose an app from the drop-down menu: To control how much Adaptive Battery affects a specific app, go to the app’s settings and choose Battery.
