If you’re weary of failing terribly at unlocking your iPhone 13 with your Apple Watch, don’t worry: you’re not alone.

In a support note issued on Sunday, Apple stated that its useful “Unlock with Apple Watch” feature, which lets users wearing a face mask or sunglasses to unlock their smartphone without using Face ID or a passcode as long as they have their Apple Watch on, may not work on some iPhone 13s. Users who try to unblock their phone may see a warning saying “Unable to Communicate with Apple Watch” or may not be able to set up the function at all, according to the firm.

In recent days, users using iPhone 13s claimed that the problem appeared to impact just Apple’s newest range of phones. Some users reported that the function worked perfectly fine on earlier devices such as the iPhone X, iPhone XS, iPhone XR, iPhone 11 Pro Max, and iPhone 12 Pro Max. Only the iPhone X and subsequent models, as well as the Apple Watch Series 3 and later, are eligible for the functionality.

Apple does not have a quick cure for iPhone 13 owners who adore this function, but its note on Sunday does suggest you can stop attempting to repair it. (Several customers attempted for hours to reset, unpair, and repair the device without success.) Some users reported that a full reset of both devices resolved the issue, but it seems like a lot of hassle to go to just to be able to unlock your phone with your watch when there are, you know, other choices.

Apple did guarantee that the bug will be resolved in a future software update, but it did not specify what the issue was or when the update would be available. Users of the iPhone 13 will most likely be out of luck till then.

“Until the update is ready, you may disable Unlock with Apple Watch and unlock your iPhone 13 with your passcode,” Apple explained.

Go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode to disable the Unlock with Apple Watch function.
