Following the statement by Samsung President TM Roh, in Korea’s Yonhap newspaper, that advertising are being taken out from some pre-installed apps by default, Samsung stated that the disruptive promotions will begin to be deleted later this year.
Yomhap said a Samsung employee raised the matter during a recent meeting in Samsung’s ‘city hall,’ following which Roh decided to remove advertisements from a number of Samsung apps from the first-party sector.
Following Roh’s decision after the City Hall, Samsung confirmed in a statement to The Verge that it will remove advertisements later in the year through an update.
“Samsung has decided to discontinue the proprietary app marketing, including Samsung Weather, Samsung Pay and Samsung theme. Our aim is to provide our users, depending on their requirements and wishes, with an innovative mobile experience. We respect our consumers’ input and are committed to providing them with the greatest experience from our Galaxy devices.”
The removal of advertisements from some first-party apps by Samsung phones is a positive sign for users since such advertisements were the source of long-term complaints by customers, especially in more premium appliances such as Galaxy S21 Ultra or Samsung’s foldable Z- series phone in recent years. And while Samsung has not fixed a certain date when the update would come, it is quite likely to be part of Samsung’s annual One UI upgrade, which was often delivered sometime in late autumn during the last many years.
Although this is positive, this move will hopefully be just the beginning of a more thorough effort to stop advertisements for other Samsung applications and devices, in particular Samsung TV, which have been similarly criticized for commercials on top of its premium TVs in previous years.
And then there are other situations such as notices that Samsung occasionally sends to Samsung devices after the big product releases or notices from applications such as Samsung’s global targets which try to urge you to opt-in.
Ideally, Samsung would do rid of advertisements in all its applications and devices unless specifically allowed to display user promotions, which is more bearable in products such as Kindle’s Amazon e-readers, where devices with ads are clearly labelled and provide a price reduction.
