Your gaming console could also consume 25 times the minimum energy it requires in standby mode — and your energy bills could be inflated silently. Idle power drain is also less ecological, which is another reason to control and correct energy consumption in your console. The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) Environment advocacy group said Xbox owners in particular could collectively make an additional $500 million for electricity bills because of their default power mode settings.

The Xbox Series X|S and PS5 are more efficient to be fair with Sony and Microsoft, as compared to older consoles, when you stream movies or do fewer tasks. However, your power settings on these consoles should be reviewed to prevent draining of your wallet and waste of energy.

Here are some of what you can do in order to reduce energy bills, how much power your consoles consume.

How to reduce Xbox Series power consumption?

In most areas the Xbox Series X|S is instant-on-powered. This allows the console to play games on your smartphone and to update and install games in standby mode on the console. Instant-on-the-mode, the Xbox Series X|S consumes 10-13W of energy – versus 0.4-0.5W when power saving mode is enabled.

If the console has not been bought and power saving is a key factor, the S series has an advantage. Even when games are being played, Microsoft claims the S series (74W) is half as powerful as the X series (153W). Naturally, there are other considerations and nobody buys a console with only energy saving in mind.

Regardless of which version of the latest Microsoft gaming consoles you have, a simple power tweak can save you money. Go to Xbox settings and browse General > Mode Power & Startup.

Choose Energy Saving under power mode to ensure that your console does not consume more energy than it needs.

You can also select the duration of the time you wait for the Xbox to turn off on this settings page. The minimum time after 1 hour of inaction is 1 hour and when you stream music or movies 2 hours of inactivity.

In Settings you can of course go to “Power mode & startup” and choose Full Shutdown to completely turn off your Xbox. Once this is done, you can unplug it in order to be sure that electricity is not wasted.

How to reduce PS4 and PS5 electricity consumption

You can reduce console electricity by opening Settings on PlayStation 5 and heading to System > Power Saving. The PlayStation 4 also offers these options through Settings > Power Save Settings. These options are also available.

The Set Time Set menu for both PS4 and PS5 is the Rest Mode entry. By default, you can rest your console after 1 hour of inactiveness during playing, and when streaming films, you are four hours of inactivity. The time can be reduced to less power.

The two Sony consoles have an option called Rest Mode Features. Here you can choose whether to let the console load your controllers with USB ports while holding the PS5 in rest mode. You can also decide if the console can be connected to the internet in rest mode. You will not be able to download games or updates if you disable internet access if you are not in use.

The PS5 enables you to switch time off Controllers by PlayStation. The time you want to wait before the DualSense controller is off, you can quickly select. Reduce the time here will extend the battery life of your controller.

Finally, once you have clicked PS on the controller, you can shut down PS5 and select Power > Turn off PS5. You can use pressing the PS button on the controller and then picking the Turn Off PS4 for the corresponding option on a PS4. Instead of rest mode which will bring the console into a powerless state that still draws a little electricity, this will initiate a complete shut-down.
