How to register now with the iOS 15 Developer Beta

The public beta for iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 will start in July, but Apple’s new mobile operating systems can be used by users even earlier by building the developer. These versions are less stable than a public beta and you will have to meet several requirements but this is the fastest way to see first-hand the new iOS/iPadOS 15 features.

Here is all you need to qualify for beta access for the developer:

Have an account with Apple developer

For general users, this is the biggest obstacle. An Apple Developer Account costs $100 per year, but everybody can participate. There are a few other requirements, such as two-factor subscription and full legal name and address. The registration also allows you to access macOS 12, watchOS 8, and application development instruments early on.

Have a device compatible with iOS/iPadOS 15

Until your iPhone or iPad supports iOS 14, the developer beta can be installed (or the public beta launching in the coming weeks). Here is the complete list of Apple supported devices:

iOS 15

  • iPhone 12, 12 Mini, 12 Pro, 12 Pro Max
  • iPhone 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max
  • iPhone XS, XS Max
  • iPhone XR
  • iPhone X
  • iPhone 8, 8 Plus
  • iPhone 7, 7 Plus
  • iPhone 6s, 6s Plus
  • iPhone SE (1st and 2nd gen)
  • iPod touch (7th gen)

iPadOS 15

  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th gen)
  • iPad Pro 11-inch (1st, 2nd, and 3rd gen)
  • iPad Pro 10.5-inch
  • iPad Pro 9.7-inch
  • iPad (5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th gen)
  • iPad Mini (5th gen)
  • iPad Mini 4
  • iPad Air 2
  • iPad Air (3rd and 4th gen)

If something goes wrong, have a contingency plan

Although not a requirement, before installing the developer betas — or public beta — you should backup your iPhone or iPad data. In case of major stability issues, Apple also suggests that users install OS beta on secondary devices, not on their main iPhone or iPads.

Update Download

If you fulfill these needs and you feel comfortable installing an unfinished operating system on your device, connect to the Apple Developer Portal and follow the download and update instructions.

If you can’t install the update of the developer, don’t allow FOMO to reach you. Software that is never finished is unstable and can be a problem to use. The downstream version will be much less risky for the forthcoming weeks, and stable versions of iOS 15, iPadOS 15 and other upcoming OS updates from Apple will come into full working order later this year.
